Spring Fronts For Largemouth Bass

Being the weekend warrior that I am, I was never really in-turned with the weather or what it was going to do during a day. Since I wanted to fish, and don't we all, it was my objective to get in a days fishing where and when I could.

This Saturday morning was no different. It was not raining, though cloudy, and since I had spent most of Friday evening getting everything ready, I pulled out of the yard and headed on. It was just about five o'clock and the sun it looked darker than usual with the cloud cover.

As I got to the lake I was not surprised to see that I was the only one there. In fact, I was somewhat pleased. Just the thought of having the lake all to myself kind of sent a chill down my spine. I could see all the bass jumping into the boat as I prepared things for the days fishing, regardless if it rained or not.

As I entered the place where I wanted to start I felt great about the fact that no one was there. I started up the creek in my usual way, throwing some spinner baits and jigs, working the trees and other cover such as beaver damns etc.. The water was moving slow and it gave me a great opportunity to work the cover properly.

It was only a few minutes when I had the first fish on, and boy was I disappointed. For those visions of those largemouth's between 10 and 12 pounds became reality with this fish, which weighed about a pound if that. After throwing the fish back I spotted a familiar beaver hut that has always given some interesting moments. I first threw a plastic worm with a 1/8 once sinker into the pile of trash and sticks which seemed to be holding on the beavers house. I worked the worm slowly, feeling the bottom as I lifted the rod then cranked the reel to take up the slack line. Then as I started to life the rod a second time I felt the tug of a fish on the other end.

As I tightened the line I could feel the fish moving off with the bait. I stuck to all the basics and waiting until I was satisfied that the fish had the worm. I then pulled back to set the hook. The rod tip headed for the water and I knew it was a nice fish. After a few minutes of fighting the fish I managed to get her next to the boat, and a nice one it was. I lifted her into the boat and my dreams of the big bass had just become reality. I pulled out my scale which was not the most actuate one. I weighed the fish and the scale told me was around 4 1/2 pounds and I took it at its word.

While I had been fighting the fish, the boat had moved so I started to get in position again. But this time, I picked up my jig rod which had a black jig with a worm tail attached around 4 inches. I threw the jig deep into the cover and started working it back out. I waited for a strike each time I felt it jump over a branch or log.

I worked the jig two or three times threw the cover before I felt that familiar tug on the line. After sitting the hook I was into it again, fighting the fish, which did not want to be in my boat by no means.

I stayed at the beaver hut for about an hour and caught five bass there which I did not think was a bad effort. It was most likely one of my best efforts in a long time of fishing the place.

I moved on up the creek and fished several good spots and caught for or five additional fish. As I moved on, I came to a tree that had fell in the water since I was there about a week ago. It of course looked great so I thought I would give it a try. My first effort was with the white double bladed spinner I had been throwing. And on the first throw I had a bass on the line. Shortly after taking the fist off I saw a huge swirl near a clump of lilly pads on the other side of the tree. So like many excited anglers, I hurried to get into a position to throw the spinner.

I must have thrown that spinner a dozen times without any thing, not even a bump, nothing. I laid the spinner down and threw the jig into the pads working it slowly out to the edge when thump, then a heavy tug on the line as I pulled back to set the hook. This fish was the one I was looking for. It was fighting much harder than the larger fish I had caught earlier. It took a few minutes before the swirl was at the boat. I could see that it was a nice fish, but had not been able to see what it was. At that moment I was thinking it was a large grinnel when the fish came out of the water, walked on its tail for a few feet and disappeared into the water, leaving me looking at the rod tip with my black jig smiling at me.

Of course, I had to swear a little, say a couple of oh man's and then sit down to recap what had happen. My thoughts where filled with that bass doing his tail walk and then disappearing. It also seemed like a good time to take a sandwich out with a drink and ponder how the morning had been. It was at this time when I think I realized that this day was different in many ways from others.

As the boat drifted down the creek, I looked at the things around me. The water was moving slowly, it was cloudy, in fact, it looked as if the bottom would drop out any moment. It was around 70 degrees by now, not to hot and not too cold. I thought of what the weather man had said about a front moving through and this was surely it. It had also done a couple of things for me besides making it a great fishing day.

As I finished my lunch it started to drizzle a little and I knew that the rain would not be far behind. I decided to fish has much as I could before the rain set it.

By the time I made it back to the dock it was raining pretty good, cause I was mostly soaked, since I could not find but one or two dry places left on me. After loading the boat and getting the truck moving in the right direction home, and even being that it was still early, around 11 o'clock, it had been a great day.

I had landed around 15 bass and I had the creek all to myself. On a good day I usual catch around a dozen bass in that creek if I stay there from morning to dusk, so this day was especially good. It also made the drive home nice even though it was pouring down by the time I got back home.
