IS IT ALL RIGHT IF I DON'T HUNT?

Change of Habits

by Darrell E. Mulroy

I have been deer hunting since I was 13 years old in l957 and I have decades of experience tramping through the woods of Minnesota and countless other trips in other states.

Now that I am over 50 with heart problems and assorted aches and pains, I find myself enjoying staying behind in the cabin to cook for the troops. I love to get up early and make a killer breakfast and the loud, frequently and vocal approval attests to my culunary skills at all hours.

I love to drive the boys out to their stands, come and get them and help bring in the deer. A few have question my change of habit and I make it clear that I'm not turning into an anti-hunter.

I enjoy seeing the young hunters bring in their game. The excitement is as much fun for me as them. I take some time to leave the cabin and sit under a tree and figure if some stupid deer wants to run over me while I nap a little in the late fall sun, he can take his chances against me and a .357 Magnum I carry. I walk around the camp area and will admit here but not to the boys around the cabin that I have seen plenty of deer I could have taken, but in all cases I smiled at them and yelled, "get your ass out of here". I smiled to myself as they scamper off into the woods for someone else to take if they are smart enough.

As my late years gain on me, I find no loss of interest in the woods and hunting. I have just changed my methods. I talk to many others in my age group and many admit they are also doing what I am doing.

If someone in your group doesn't seem to be excited about the hunt, but still shows up, don't chastise them. The advancing years changes our views on plenty of things, and hunting is just one of them.
