Bass Fishing-Basic Lures & Tackle.

Whether you are a beginning bass fisherman, or a seasoned bass fishing tournament professional, you need basic fishing tackle for your tackle box.

There are lots of lures that you can use for different lakes and weather and water conditions. Hoever, some lures will work regardless of the weather or water conditions or water temperature.

Is there one lure that can be used for every bass fishing condition on every lake?

There may be, but fortunately we do not have to rely on any one lure to work and can use several different types of lures to find fish under different conditions.

Almost any one can catch bass if they can find them. This is why bass fishing guides are so successful with their clients. The bass fishing guides find the bass, show their clients where to fish, and what lures are working best on that particular lake and time, and the clients can concentrate on catching fish rather than trying to find fish.

However, if you are like lots of bass fishing people, you want to find and catch your own fish.

A friend of mine used to say that it didn't matter what bait you used, as long as it was a black worm. I kinda feel that way about the rattle trap. Although I probably own over 200 rattle traps in different sizes and colors, one size and color has proven to be my most consistent producer. This is the 1/2 oz. chrome with a blue back.

The rattle trap by Bill Lewis is, in my opinion, one of the best, if not the best lures to locate bass year around.

There are other similar baits such as the hot spot and bullet and rapala and other similar baits that will also catch fish. However, whether it is because of the rattle, or the design of the body, or the vibration, the rattle trap has proven to be my best producing bait.

I have tested this theory on bass in several different lakes when the bass were really feeding. It really didn't matter if the lake was Toledo Bend, Lake Fork, Sam Rayburn, Murvaul, Monticello, Lake O the Pines, Lone Star, Palestine or any other lake.

I have found fish concentrated and experimented with different sizes and colors of rattle traps and by more than two to one, the absolute best and most consistent producer was the 1/2 oz. chrome with blue back rattle trap.

What does this mean to you? If you are trying to find fish, you want to use the most likely lure that is available. Once you find fish, you can then experiment with other lures and colors and sizes to see if the bass might be hitting other colors or types of baits that particular day.

Another lure that is absolutely the best of its class to find bass is the white spinner bait in 3/8 oz. or 1/2 oz. It really doesn't seem to matter about the size as much as it does the color. Regardless of the weather conditions or water temperature, the white spinner bait will give you the most strikes even in murky or muddy water.

The second most productive color in spinner baits is the chartreuse color, especially in murky water or muddy water. Rubber skirts are also the most productive year around.

Although I probably own and fish with over a 100 different sizes and colors at times, the best spinner bait to locate bass is white.

In plastic worms, there are litterly hundreds of different sizes and colors. However, the best color I have found to locate fish in different water conditions and temperatures is the 6" bandit in tequilla sunrise.

This bait will catch bass year around and under almost every condition, from spawning bass to suspended bass, from shallow water to deep water.

The 6" bandit also has enough action that it will catch bass that want a moving bait. Lots of times I have been reeling in the bandit and bass will hit it. When this happens, it is then sometimes best to switch to a spinner bait or rattle trap, rather than a worm.

Once you locate the bass, you can then experiment with other sizes, styles and colors of worms to see if a different kind will catch more fish.

The basic way to fish the 6" bandit is using the Texas rig. Although at times, the carolina rig will produce better. Usually when the carolina rig is best, the french fry type bait or lizard will work better, expecially on spawning bass.

Another good bait to locate bass, especially after the spawn is over, and bass have moved back to deep water, is the 9A bomber. The 9A bomber can be used from shallow water as a crank bait, digging up the mud, all the way out to 20' to 22'. How in the world do you fish a crank bait down to 22'? By trolling.

The 9A bomber will catch fish by trolling it even when they will absolutely not hit anything else.

Trolling is so effective, some clubs and tournaments do not allow it in competition. This does not mean you can't use it in practice to locate bass.

I do not believe in handicaps, whether it is bowling, golf, or bass fishing. I want to be able to use every method available to find and catch bass.

Trolling is one of these methods and the 9A bomber is without any competition in this category. Color? Firetiger (chartreuse with black tiger stripes), without a doubt.

Trolling is usually outlawed and banned in almost every competitive bass tournament. Why? Because you can catch bass year around by trolling. Anyone can catch bass trolling, and I assume that the people who make the rules want to limit the field to only those people who can cast and retrieve.

There are special techniques that you need to learn to be able to troll down to 20' and where to troll most effectively.

If you are interested, email me and I will give you some additional tips on line size, speed, amount of line to let out, and specific places to troll for bass.

For details, email: outdoors@wildgoose.com

Don't let anyone tell you that trolling is unsportsmanlike. It is simply one method of bass fishing that works all year around, regardless of the weather and water conditions.

And, it can be used to locate bass during practice and then you can use "legal methods" to catch the bass during the tournament.

Once you have found the bass by trolling, you will need a method of catching them in deep water. One of the basic lures for catching bass in 20 to 25 feet of water is the chrome jigging spoon in 1/2 oz. The chrome jigging spoon is probably one of the most productive lures that can be used by bass fishermen once bass have been located in deep water.

The primary food source of large mouth bass is the shad. Evidently the chrome jigging spoon more closely resembles the action of the shad than any other bait. I have also experimented with other colors and sizes, and consistently the 1/2 oz. chrome works best.

I have used the chrome jigging spoon to catch over 20 bass in as many minutes. Once you have the bass pinpointed, you can litterly wear them out in a few minutes.

On lots of occasions, I have used the chrome jigging spoon to catch over a 100 bass in one spot. Usually when you catch one bass, there will be lots more in that same area and the jigging spoon is the fastest and most productive lure to catch them with.

Although the above lures are just part of what you need to catch bass, these basic lures will work more often than not. If you have any specific lures that work for you, less us know. We want all the information available to catch bass.

In order to qualify, the bass must be a Trophy! You will be amazed at what size it takes to qualify. No wonder Lake Fork has developed into the Premier Trophy Bass Lake in America.

Lake Fork Reservoir is located in EAST TEXAS approximately five miles west of Quitman, Texas and within a 1 1/2 hour drive of Dallas, Texas, Tyler, Texas, Athens, Texas and Longview, Texas.

The lake was opened for fishing in the fall of 1980 and since then has gained the reputation as the NUMBER ONE BIG BASS LAKE IN TEXAS.

Approximately 700,000 large mouth black bass have been stocked in Lake Fork for each of the past 3 years in addition to the natural spawn from the lake's own lunkers.

It is no wonder that Lake Fork is the best big bass fishing lake in Texas, and quite possible the entire South.

More big bass over 8 lbs have been caught from Lake Fork Reservoir than any other lake in Texas.

An intensive fish-management program has been one reason that currently Lake Fork claims 34 of the top 50 big bass in Texas, including the top six ranging from 17.08 LBS up to the current state record of 18.18 LBS!

By the way, in order to make the Top Fifty Big Bass List in Texas, you have to have a bass over 15 Lbs!!!
