GATUN LAKE-FISHING ADVENTURES!

This was another of the stories that happened while fishing in Panama, this one happened while I had taken some friends that had come to Panama from the Oklahoma Air National Guard, one of the guys that was in this unit had been on active duty with me so when they came down I would take leave and take them fishing.

It is nothing to go and in a matter of a couple hours and catch two hundred fish . We had decided to go up to Gatun Lake this lake is the natural lake that feeds the Panama Canal and there is ship traffic through it all the time.

We had been fishing several areas of the lake and I had thrown out another of those tiny torpedos and all of the sudden a sea gull with a wing span of about 3-31/2 feet came down and picked up that torpedo and took off. Well I decided to give him some line and I let him go, well enough was enough and I set back on the rod and that bird fell like a kite without any wind. I started reeling in this gull and he had his wings spread out and was skiing across the top of the water. When I finally got him to the boat and reached behind his head to hold his head so I could unhook him , that darned bird wasn't even hooked he just had ahold of the lure and wasn't smart enough to let go of it. Sounds pretty unbelievable I know , but I have witnesses and a video as well.

That same day we had gone into the back of one of the coves and in Panama they had these critters that strongly resemble an alligator, but they call them Caimans. Man you talk about fun to catch you toss a top water bait across and in front of them and pop it a few times and boy will they come alive on it. That day I hooked into one about 4 ft long and after he hit it I set back on the rod, this thing started to roll I bet it took me thirty minutes to get all the line that was wrapped around him loose.

I tell you if you ever get the chance to go to Panama or anywhere else in Central or South America and fish don't miss the opportunity to go.

If you would like to find out more about this type of fishing, send us an email message and let us hear from you. We might even be able to arrange a trip through one of our outfitters!

The Panamanians call the Peacocks (Sargentos) because of the stripes on them they resemble the stripes on sergeants in the military. The fish are so plentiful that they want you to keep all you catch because there are just so many.

We ended up with about two hundred and thirty fish a least thirty in the four to five pound class , one sea gull and had played with a couple of caimans that day and one of the best fishing days.

Well that's about all for now will write more later.
